Jubilee of a Violinist
On February 19 a warm and nice program dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Oscar Dain, one of the best violinists of Moldova, took place at the KJJC. The program became possible thanks to “Hevruta in Moldova” project support.
Over 50 people mostly representing intelligentsia of Kishinev – musicians, musicologists, artists, singers gathered in the hall near the JCC Museum of the Jewish Bessarabia. They could get acquainted with an interesting exhibition of rare photos and advertisements of the middle of the XXth century presented by O. Dain’s family. The most interesting were donated photos with inscriptions by such eminent musicians as Dmitry Shostakovich, Leonid Cogan, Yuri Bashmet.
Never Again
On the 27th January of 1945 the Soviet Army liberated Auschwitz, one of the most awful and tragic place on the earth where millions of people mainly Jews were murdered by Nazi. This date was proclaimed by UN as the International Day of the Holocaust Victims Memory. KJJC annually organizes memorial event dedicated to this Day.
Over 250 people came to the KJJC in spite of -15 Celsius (5,00 Fahrenheit) cold to commemorate six million Jews killed by Nazi during Holocaust. They visited special touching and tragic exhibition of documental photos and video slides, were present at the solemn meeting together with the leaders of the state, representatives of the government, ambassadors and diplomatic representatives from over 12 countries, UN, Peace Corps and other international organizations representatives, heads of the Jewish structures, scientists, students, schoolchildren.
Monuments in the Hearts
Commemoration Meeting dedicated to Semen Shoikhet (1931-2010), one of the most eminent architects of Moldova, laureate of the State Prize, author of the projects of dozens buildings and monuments that make the face of Kishinev and other towns of the country took place at the KJJC on January 19.
Over 250 people came to honor the memory of this wonderful person, one of the leaders of the Jewish renewal in Moldova in 1990s and 2000s. Semen Shoikhet headed the Republican Association of the Jewish Organizations and Communities during 1993-2004. He was the author of Sherpeny springboard (the place which strategic capture by the Soviet army in 1944 gave the start to total liberation Moldova from Nazi), Kishinev circus, National Bank of Moldova, took part in elaboration of general plans of many cities of Moldova. For the Jewish community he will remain as co-author (together with Naum Epelbaum), author of the monument to Kishinev Pogrom victims and the KJJC complex.
