JDC Centennial in Chisinau

On the evening of Thursday, November 6th at the Leo Grand Hotel in Kishinev, the Jewish community and invited guests celebrated a century of global JDC service. Over 100 people attended the centennial celebration, including leaders of the local Jewish community, important businessmen, international representatives of the JDC, as well as American, Hungarian, Polish, and Israeli diplomats. Along with refreshments and music, also featured was an impressive photo-exhibition showcasing the history of the JDC. The celebration included lovely performances by a children’s orchestra, a teenage vocal group, an opera duet, and Yiddish songs.

After a short video presentation, attendees heard moving stories about the important work JDC has done and continues to do around the world, the necessity and centrality of its work in Moldova, and well wishes and heartfelt thanks from many speakers. Special attention was paid to the work JDC does to help the basic living needs of Jews and others around the world, renewing Jewish life, and preserving Jewish heritage in Moldova. Among those who spoke include JDC Moldova director Michael Shuv, JDC Global Program Officer Ofer Glanz, Chairman of the Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova Alexander Bilinkis, First Secretary of the Embassy of Israel in Moldova Mark Basin, a representative from the government of Moldova who read a letter of congratulations from President Nicolae Timofti, and United States Ambassador to Moldova William H.
