In 2001 Dr. Spencer Foreman, USA conducted an independent survey of Jewish children in Moldova. Shortly thereafter, the Brookdale Institute, Jerusalem initiated a more detailed research on the Jewish children in Moldova. These studies concluded that there were Jewish children suffering from malnutrition and, in particular, a shortage of iodine and vitamins in their diet. These problems were most noticeable in families with low income. Thus, starting September 2002, a pilot project ("Let My Children Grow", or LMCG) was launched in Moldova for developing special nutrition programs for children (0-16 years old). By the end of 2005, over 1,600 children were listed in the project database; 1,322 received either fresh food packages or dry food packages. The project enjoys a generous assistance of Toleo Foundation from Greensboro, NC and AJJDC supervision. Another element of the program is providing ‘spiritual food' for LMCG participants. This includes celebrating festivals together and visiting the circus and theatre. During the Chanuka 1,232 children project participants in Moldova and Transnistria received hygienic products containing soap, toothpaste and tooth brush as humanitarian aid. 569 children up to 14 years old received colorful toys and games. The humanitarian aid was received from JDC New York and brought smiles on children’s face. 100 children from the neediest families of the Jewish Community of Kishinev had the opportunity to visit puppet theatre and spend wonderful time among children of the same age. Some children enjoy the benefit of SOS medical assistance. Profile
