“A koved un a fargenign—an honor and a pleasure!” That’s how Sebastian Schulman, Moldova’s first ever Jewish Service Corps (JSC) Volunteer, describes his experiences so far. “Though I have only been here a short while, I am already impressed by the warmth and vibrancy of the Kishinev Jewish Community. I look forward not only to working with people here, but also to becoming a member of this big, boisterous Bessarabian family.”
The Jewish Service Corps, a program sponsored by the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), has for twenty years placed North American college graduates and young professionals as volunteers in Jewish communities across the globe. Once there the volunteers use their enthusiasm and particular set of skills to reinvigorate communities, improving existing programs and potentially starting new ones. With a degree in History and Jewish Studies, experience in a wide variety of professional environments and proficiency in several languages, Sebastian is no exception.
“At the KJJC [Kishinev Jacobs Jewish Campus] I’m already involved in projects as diverse as fundraising and website development to Hesed’s cultural clubs, and I’m excited to do more”, Sebastian reports eagerly.
“We are currently looking for the areas in which Sebastian will be most useful in our community. There’s great potential for some excellent partnerships to be built. We’re hoping for a lasting impact,” adds Michael Finkel, Deputy Director of Kedem, Kishinev’s Jewish Cultural Center.
Sebastian will be servicing in Kishinev until August 2008.
